Summer Nights Coat

Project Overview

While working on my 50 prompts in 2025 challenge, I came up with the idea for a summer night themed quilted coat to take camping.

The initial idea was to make it out of patchwork with different appllique elements, but I think it will be too busy and the broken vertical line not terribly flattering. Instead, I plan to use Folkwear's Turkish Coat pattern and create the quilted panels with an applique firefly motif.

I got the pattern assembled and the fabrics ordered! I'm currently debating wheter or not I want to do the 2 tone background (dark purple with or without trees). I'll have to order more black for the lining if so and also its going to be a TON of extra time handsewing for ??? amounts of visual impact. I'll probably pass, though I think the trees would give important context.

Decided to hand quilt the whole thing also since I like the effect and the thought of manhandling that much fabric through my machine makes me want to tear my hair out. It's going to be slowbut hopefully not THAT bad? Also I'll be able to do my mosquito cuffs after all! I'm just going to quilt them in a matching thread so that they don't break up the visual line from a distance. I ended up going with a different color palette than originally planned based on the collage I did as a color test. I think it's going to be quite striking.

I also decided on a button and loop closure and might also add a belt at a later time. The button and loop should be the most minimally disruptive to the vertical line of the firefly lights and should be easy to remove if I don't like placement ect. I want a cool button!(Maybe a fabric one with embroidery on the top?)

I will wait to order material until I am done with the UFO shirt and possibly a few sellable collage pieces. There's no rush on this because, while I would like to wear it this season as a house and campfire coat, I'll definitely be able to get a ton of use out of it later as well.

This, of course, has not stopped me from doing a little browsing. I think batiks would give a nice painterly effect and will definitely use mostly those, though I may swap the white and black here for solids. Still no idea what to do for a liner, but I do want a secret embroidered mosquito since I won't be doing the motif on the cuffs (too busy)

These particular fabrics are more or less what I want. They are from Fat Quarter Shop.
